I just wrote that title to try to catch your attention because I know you receive a lots of messages everyday. My name is Jose Patino and I’m not Latin American. I’m American and Venezuelan but I live in Japan because I got a scholarship to study a Master here.
But the point of my email is not to talk about myself but to acknowledge something I realized in your films and your activism in general. In the movie Sicko you refer as "America" to the United States and "Americans" to its citizens. then I wonder:
What am I?
because I was born in Venezuela and I was taught in school that the continent was named America (the continent, from Alaska to Argentina) because of Americo Vespucio who was the guy who realized that the land that Columbus discovered wasn’t India but a new territory!!
Well enough about history. It seems to me that you are a guy who is a very patriotic U.S American and who cares about your people and the Social issues facing your society and I sincerely appreciate it, particularly I liked in your film sicko when you go to Cuba and share time with the reality of those people who are also Americans (Cubans) because Cuba is part of the American Continent.
Well, my point here is that I think it’s offensive to be Americans with a prefix. For me Latin American is not acceptable. I’m as American as you are and as all people in the United States are. If we can not deal with that, then we may start using prefix for every one. please tell me which one you think is better:
– U.S. Americans
– persons from the United States
– Unitedstatesians
Well in the bottom line of all this I would like us all to be one day a single big continent of cooperation and prosperity where all can be called Americans and America will have its wider and correct meaning. Because I think (and i may be speaking for all other Americans that are not from the U.S.) that the way you guys use the term America and Americans is nothing else but Imperialism.
My Best Regards
Jose A. Patino (American and Venezuelan)
